Road.cc Reviews the Juniper Ridge 650B x 48

We like Road.cc, the British web site, because they really ride the products they test. They’ve got a number of testers, and their opinions are refreshingly unbiased and honest. At the end of each test, they ask their reviewers “Would you buy this product?” and “Would you recommend this product to a friend?”

Recently, they reviewed our Juniper Ridge dual-purpose knobbies, and tester Stu Kerton replied “Yes” to both questions. His summary explains why:“The Juniper Ridge has been designed to work just as well on the road as it does off the beaten track. I was sceptical, but to be honest they are pretty good, giving a boost to your average speed on those tarmac sections between the tracks and trails.”

Grip on gravel and in mud impressed him, too: “Cornering on hard-packed gravel, the Junipers had just the right level of grip for the knobbles to dig into the gravel so you could blast round at speed. […] They grip well on soft mud and the tread doesn’t seem to hang onto any dirt either, shedding it before it can become compacted between the knobbles. The only place they did suffer a bit was on wet, sticky chalk, which could clog up the tread.” But then, I suspect that any tire will clog up in that type of sticky mud…

    How about a 650x38B Steilacoom equivalent. Would nicely fit under the fenders of a standard BQ 650x42B randonneuse.

    Dear Jan,

    Can you give a sense of when it would be better to buy the Juniper Ridge and when it would be better to get the Switchback Hill. In case it helps, I’ve been riding the Loup Loups on my everyday bike for years — so many that I’ve just had to replace the back after it wore through — and I’m now thinking of putting your 650×48’s into my hardtail mountain bike, which I ride on gravel and non particularly technical single track. Any advice from you or other readers would be most appreciated.

      Good question. Our all-road tread pattern is perfect for paved roads and most gravel. On paved roads, the fine ribs interlock with the road surface and significantly increase grip. On most gravel, it’s the rocks sliding on other rocks, not the tire sliding on the top rocks, so tread patterns make little difference.

      It’s only where your tire makes an imprint on the surface that knobs increase traction: mud, soft forest soils, wet snow… In those cases, our dual-purpose knobbies really shine. However, since they don’t give up anything on gravel, and very little on pavement, I’d pick the knobbies if I’m heading out on a ride where I don’t know what to expect. The knobbies probably wear a little faster, but not much – many riders get 3000+ miles on their Steilacooms.

        Thanks so much, Jan. I’ve decided to go with the Juniper Ridge (and I ordered another Loup Loup, since it was a day saver today that I had a spare and I’d hate not to have one around for when the front one goes). If the Juniper Ridge gives a ride anywhere near as nice on the hardtail as I’ve enjoyed on my Rivendell with the Loup Loups, I’ll consider myself blessed.

    I’ve been riding Steilacom’s , the 38mm little brother of the Juniper Ridge all season on mixed paved and unpaved roads. I totally agree with the reviewers comments. You don’t give up much speed – if any – on pavement and hardpack. When you hit some rough or soft stuff, like freshly graded dirt and gravel, you are thankful for the grippy studs. Great all around tire.
